David W. Sumner
1958 - 2017
Documentary photographer working in San Francisco, CA and Reno, NV.
" I make pictures of the social environment. The environment we create and live in and are often unaware of. I'm interested in engaging the viewer in a way that heightens awareness, that evokes thought and questioning. My work is not about providing answers." -David W. Sumner
In 1988 David moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to begin his career in photography, taking a job as a photo researcher at Mountain Light Photography. Since then, in addition to freelancing, he worked as a studio/darkroom assistant, print finisher and in the late 1990s was Picture Editor at StageImage. For the past several years of his life, he focused on personal projects documenting the social context of his urban environment. He moved to Reno, NV in 2015 with his wife, the painter, Anna Conti. He passed away in March 2017, due to terminal complications from Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (more about that in his CLL blog. )
