Growing up on a small island in the Aegean did not afford me anything much in the way of art materials, but the dream of art was always there. When my family moved to Istanbul while waiting for our immigration to the US, I discovered watercolor paints and fell instantly in love with them.
Of course, sometimes dreams get put on the back burner in order to get on with life. Work, raising a family, and life generally takes center stage putting doing artwork on the list of "things to do someday" category. I feel fortunate that my time has come. Now artwork is finally on my "things to do today" list, and I am enjoying every minute of it. Where there is a will, there is a way they say, and it's never too late to start. Even though I occasionally dabble in acrylics and collage, I am most often drawn to watercolor. For me it has a luminosity, transparency and fluidity that no other medium can match. My subject matter usually consists of whatever bright or beautiful thing happens to catch my attention. |
