| I'm a painter and a realist, by which I mean: things in my paintings are recognizable and seem "photographic." They are not copies of photographs, although I do use photographs (I take them myself) to assist in the research and planning phase of a painting. The digital camera and the computer have replaced the pencil sketches and color studies that I used to do before starting a canvas. Once my digital sketch is completed, I transfer the image to a (bigger) canvas by the old-fashioned pencil grid method. I live in San Francisco and make it the setting for most of my paintings. I work in series and it usually takes me a year or two to complete 10 or 12 paintings united by a theme or a narrative. Throughout the time I'm working on the paintings in this series, I'll take time out to do commissions and/or "one-offs" (a single painting, usually a cityscape, not related to any other paintings.) Symbolism has always been a strong interest of mine and it plays a part in every painting I make, but I try not to to be obvious about it, and to make the painting easy to understand and enjoy even if you don't get any of the symbolism. Lately I've been working on a series of paintings about urban Caves. My upcoming series will be about the relationship between Time, Space, and Humanity. I work in my studio full time, either painting, planning paintings, or reading and writing about painting (I have a daily art blog which currently gets about 300 -500 unique visitors per day.) When I get a little free time, I go outside to paint a bit, or to the galleries to look at art.
