"I went on a 5 day camping trip to Kings Canyon National Park (California) with my husband and 3 friends, one of whom is Keara O'Doherty, a very accomplished 13 year old artist. She has handled many media successfully; she goes to art camps every summer, and likes to work on projects of her own choice at home. I am mostly an abstract painter and printmaker, but I like to keep my hand and eye in practice with sketching. Both Keara and I brought our art supplies along on the trip and one day we sat at the camp table in the warm sun, shaded by huge cedars, and made portraits of one another. We have very different styles, but each portrait caught much of the sitter's resemblance."
