Trickster Throws the Dice - PRESS RELEASE | |||||||||||||||||||
| - a new series by Anna Conti is at HANG ART annex October 2nd through 31st, 2003. Anna Conti tells a whimsical and ambiguous story of love, life, and fate through a series of natural, realistic paintings full of sharp details and wonderful translucent light. Conti - a quintessentially San Franciscan artist - uses deep, luminous color palette with complex undertones evocative of the Pacific Ocean. Her brush strokes are precise and focused; they give her larger paintings the intimate feeling of a classical miniature. Anna Conti paints in series, each concentrating on some beloved part of San Francisco history or landscape. Although this new series deals with an allegorical subject of Trickster it is firmly grounded in familiar scenes of San Francisco's Ocean Beach. But what makes her new series a "must see" - is that her paintings are fun! And if while enjoying the humor, the color, the richness, we get a glimpse of a larger inner working of fate, well all the better. "Trickster Throws the Dice" is the result of Conti's extensive study of mythology as well as decades of refining her unique photo-realistic painting style. The trickster is a universal archetype--an ordinary, often fallible, character that ignores rules and crosses borders. to bring new thoughts or objects into being. In different cultures, the Trickster takes on different shapes, e.g., the Fox (European), the Coyote (Native American), the Raven (Northwestern and Arctic Circle tribes), and the Badger (Japanese). The Africans considered the Hare to be the Trickster, and when the slaves were brought to America, he became B'rer Rabbit and ultimately the smart aleck, Bugs Bunny. Artists might be considered Tricksters, as they use different figuration and imagination to expose reality and bring new worlds into being. Trickster Throws the Dice |
