Trickster Throws the Dice Opening Reception: 6pm - 9pm HANG ART annex |

| "Trickster Throws the Dice" - a new series by Anna Conti - is at HANG ART annex October 2nd through 31st. Anna Conti tells a whimsical and ambiguous story of love, life, and fate through a series of realistic paintings full of sharp details and translucent light. Conti - a quintessentially San Franciscan artist uses a deep, luminous color palette and renders her subjects with elegant accuracy. Her brush strokes are precise and focused; they give these larger paintings the intimate feeling of a classical miniature. Anna Conti paints in series, each concentrating on some beloved part of San Francisco history or landscape. Although this new series deals with the allegorical subject of Trickster, it is firmly grounded in familiar narratives and recognizable Ocean Beach scenes. But what makes her new series a must see is that these paintings are lighthearted and fun! And through the humor, the color, the richness, we also get a glimpse of the larger inner working of fate in our lives. "Trickster Throws the Dice" is the result of Conti's extensive study of mythology as well as decades of refining her unique, photo-realistic painting style. The trickster is a universal Archetype - an ordinary, often fallible character that ignores rules and crosses borders to bring new thoughts or objects into being. The Trickster takes on different shapes in different cultures, e.g., the Fox (European), the Coyote (Native American), the Raven (Northwestern and Arctic Circle tribes), and the Badger (Japanese). The Africans considered the Hare to be the Trickster, and when the slaves were brought to America, he became B'rer Rabbit and ultimately the smart aleck, Bugs Bunny. Artists might be considered their own kind of Tricksters, as they use different figuration and imagination to expose reality and bring new worlds into being. On Thursday October 2nd, there will be a public reception from 6 to 8pm at HANG ART annex at 567 Sutter Street, San Francisco. Slides or digital images available upon request. |
