Sachiko Nakamura Memorial Celebration
Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004

(Continued from page 1)
...Then, we were treated to “I’ll Remember You” by Dee Ka’ala Carmack on the ukulele, with hula by Sylvia Tewes & Heather Barrett.

A slide show followed - more contemporary photos (late 70's to present) of Sachiko's performances, and photos of her personal life. The sound track for the slide show was a piece of music composed by Sachi's friend Chizuko Endo. Then we all sat in the darkened theater and listened to what was probably Sachi's favorite piece of music, "Medley: Over the Rainbow / Wonderful World" by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.
As the house lights came up, the pied piper, Phil Deal with his bamboo flute, led us out of the theater, through the lobby and down the ramp to the sidewalk.

Phil was accompanied by Bernie Rauch on the Tibetan bowl/bell, and I think there was someone on a drum. We were following Sachi's altar, which, guided by Angelica Bogner and Tommy D, led the procession around the block to the loading dock (party patio) of Project Artaud, where Sachiko lived with her husband, Dale Erickson.

The courtyard was packed, shoulder to shoulder, as well as spilling out onto the street and into the halls of Project Artaud.

There was an enormous amount of food, but when I left at 6pm, most of it was gone. Dee Ka'ala Carmack and his ukulele students played a few tunes and then other musicians joined in, jamming ...

I'm sure the party went on for a while after I left - especially since some Sachi's friends were performing at other venues that same evening, and would be likely to come by after their shows closed.
